Camp
CoHoLo's greatest resource is our pool of dedicated volunteers.
Despite the significant work involved in planning and hosting a
camp for so many children, Camp CoHoLo has no paid staffers.
CoHoLo volunteers
include the board of directors, the doctors and nurses of the medical
staff, a camp director, a supporting cast of program directors,
and cabin counselors.
The camp director
and the program directors meet year-round to plan for the camp.
The directors develop the activities and schedules, arrange for
the purchase or donation of food and supplies, and recruit additional
volunteers.

While the Camp Director and
program directors work year-round to organize camp, the time commitment
for counselors is limited just to camp. We have an orientation and
training meeting the Saturday night before camp, and then counselors
volunteer for one or both sessions. If you've never been a counselor
before, we recommend you start with one session; frankly, some of
us simply don't have the stamina to be active for an entire week.
Each counselor is paired with
at least one other counselor of the same gender, and they are assigned
a group of children of the same age. The counselors share a cabin
with their children, and make sure that they sleep, eat, behave
and have fun. It's difficult to have eighty children and thirty
adults stay on schedule the entire day, but a key part of the counselor's
job is to make sure their cabin arrives on time for every activity
and meal.
While counselors are responsible
for supervising the children, they will also be immersed in the
children's activities. Counselors often participate right along
side the children, and ‘acting like children' can be a lot of fun.
The 4-H Center has eight to
ten 4-H counselors on staff the entire summer, so the 4-H staff
are always around to lend counselors a helping hand. In addition,
at least half of our counselors have been at CoHoLo before, and
over a quarter of our counselors are former CoHoLo campers. With
all that experience, you don't need to be the outdoorsy type to
be a great counselor.
We do look for some
key attributes in our counselors. First, you have to like kids,
and you have to be willing to do ‘kid things' for at least four
days. Second, you need to be positive and flexible, because our
daily schedules can change at a moment's notice. Third, you have
to adhere to a set of common sense rules to keep the kids safe and
to keep the camp running smoothly. With so many kids and adults
in camp, it is important that counselors follow the instructions
of the Camp Director and her committee members.
Board member
We have approximately twenty members on our Board of Directors (BOD).
The BOD is responsible for maintaining the mission of Camp CoHoLo
and overseeing the Operations Committee that organizes camp. The
BOD meets in January, March, May, July and October. The BOD has
subcommittees for public relations, fundraising and BOD member recruitment.
Camp CoHoLo is always looking for prospective BOD members who love
our mission and have the skills to improve our organization.
